Does Test Prep Work? Last week I became interviewed by Chapel Hill highschool guidance counselor, Kristen Hiemstra.

The link above talks about a GPA dining table supplied to the eight universities, but it doesn’t explain how the GPA is calculated. It appears to use a weighted scale where the very best score is 4.3. I haven’t learned how this number is calculated. The spreadsheet then proceeds to choose the higher rating associated with each of the two GPA figures. It’s always struck me that the SAT scores make up two-thirds of this index. I could really use some advise on how to approach SAT test prep for my quadruplets. [me: OMG]
I’ve 3 girls and 1 kid. They took the PSAT in sophomore and they will take the PSAT again this October year.
One of the drawbacks of having all my children the same age is that any mistakes we make affects all four. None of them benefit so I hope to get this as right as I can from me learning from my mistakes.
Do you think I should have them study as being a small team together under my guidance (from experience it really is like trying to herd cats); get a tutor for the four of these in a small group; have someone tutor them separately; or deliver them to a test prep center that is SAT? Or a combination of all of these? I have to view my costs too.
How do you find a tutor that is good? What is the test prep company that is best?

Dear Multiple Mom,
My gut says to do some work together along with four (e.g. plenty of vocab, full practice tests, and they can explain answers to one another because that is clearly a great way to learn), and do some preparation separately. Whenever you can find an affordable tutor(s), that’s the most effective means.
Listed here are a couple of questions to ask a potential tutor (or test prep company):
1) Do you personalize your approach and, if so, just how?
2) exactly What’s your score that is average gain student? Numerous tutors will not respond to this concern because there are incredibly variables that are many it’s very nearly perhaps not fair to inquire of. That said, an excessive ‘average score gain’ should be considered a flag. e.g., 200 points in 30 days.
3) How long do you advise students to prepare for the SAT and how much does it cost? The answer that is right be specific and will depend on where the pupil begins and what the target is.
4) What test prep materials do you use? ( If it’s not formal College Board material, be wary.)
5) just how much homework will there be between sessions? (a tutor that is great have students do as much act as possible off the clock, such as vocab and practice tests.)
The first step is to own all four kids take the state university Board practice SAT. You should use one from the College Board’s Blue Book, or a practice is had by the College Board test on its website.

Regarding test prep companies, we’d stay away from anyone who does not primarily use College Board product (that would include most/if not all large, brand-name test prep companies).
