HAVING A BABY ON NANTUCKET
The
idea of delivering on Nantucket seems to cause mixed feelings.
There is a romantic notion to the idea of delivering here,
having a true Nantucket Native. On the other hand, many people
rightfully worry about delivering 30 miles out to sea, without
Obstetric or Pediatric specialists immediately available.
Nantucket Cottage Hospital has solved this dilemma with a
new, up-to-date maternity unit that is unequalled on the mainland
for its ability to make someone feel at home and comfortable
while in labor. Also, the hospital has close relationships
with the leading hospitals and specialists in New England
and a long history of arranging safe, urgent transfers via
MedFlight.
Hospital personnel are very good at knowing when a patient
needs to be off-island because of unexpected risks. The hospital's
Director of Obstetrics is Dr.
Bruce Cohen, a Maternal and Fetal Medicine specialist
out of Boston. He comes here monthly to evaluate everyone
intending to deliver on-island. With such monitoring and risk
surveillance, new topnotch facilities and equipment, plus
one-on-one nursing with an experienced, encouraging and confident
staff of nurses, I believe that having a new little restless
native, is safer then it has ever been.
OUR PHILOSOPHY OF MATERNITY CARE
"The
one thing the four countries of the world with the lowest
infant mortality have in common is that the majority of
women are attended to in birth by a midwife" (Marsden
Wagner, M.D., World Health Organization).
We
are not midwives, but short of putting on Birkenstocks and
long, flowery skirts, we try to practice like a midwife would
when it comes to maternity care. Midwifery care centers around
birth being a natural process, not a medical problem. It focuses
on educating couples about childbirth options, a partnership
between the midwife and the parents-to-be with the goal being
a safe, bouncy newborn. We will try and make your hospital
birth as comfortable and rewarding as possible.
